Using enamels for Intricate bead detailing with Margaret Zinser CLASS #MZ-01(OR 02) PLUS MZ-03 Skill Level: Intermediate

In this 3 part class you will have a 3 hour demo on Thursday night learning to make basic shapes during an open torch period with demos from Margaret with lots of time to make your own. Then Friday night you will have another night to try some more shapes on your own time. On Sat there will be 2 classes on applying the enamels, then Sunday you will split a class to torch on the enamels. This 3 part class will count as 2 picks, one NON- torch class (one of the Sat classes) and one participating torch (the Sunday firing enamels on beads class). For example: You will watch demo on Thursday and make some shapes that you will keep with you as you progress through parts of class. Saturday you will get either an Am or a PM class to apply your detailed enamel, then Sunday morning we load them all into a kiln and the 2 class students take turns firing on the finished designs. You will get to complete 2 beads each from your basic shapes. This is the only way we can offer such a labor intensive class.
More specifically: Part 1: (4 hours) Sculpting/ shaping paint-able pieces - We'll work together to create both on-mandrel and off-mandrel sculptural bases for later painting with vitreous enamels. Margaret will show you a couple bug-related themes. If bugs aren't your thing- don't worry! Margaret will help you adapt the techniques she uses to make her bug beads to whatever content you choose!
Part 2: (2 parts, 4 hours) Mixing & Using Vitreous Enamel Paints- In this component, we'll learn how to mix vitreous enamels with medium and learn how to apply them to our pre-made components. Margaret will share her strategies for mixing, layering, fading, and stippling enamel paints to get the detail and vibrant color that characterize her Beetle and Butterfly beads. Learning enamel painting opens up your beadmaking to a whole new world of detail and color- join us for this insipring, fun, and informative workshop!
Part 3: (1 hour) Once all of our pieces are painted, we need to 'fire' the enamels. Margaret will share her strategies for firing mandrel and off-mandrel pieces.
